f235, Kodak Portra 160, about 8 seconds (or however long it took the escalator to get from one end to the other)
Part of a new series I’m working on (actually, probably an outtake), “People Movers,” highlighting all the mechanical devices humans use to avoid walking short distances.
Others so far are here and here

Leicester Square, London, June 2005
Leicester Square is where movies premiere in England. It’s where you see paparazzi flash and stars walking red carpets in true Hollywood style. There are even plaques with stars’ hand prints. There are four movie theaters around the square.
The night I shot this (it was about 9 p.m. and still very light…one reason I love England in the summer), the square was pretty crowded with cinema-goers, tourists, buskers and panhandlers.
The square was established in the mid-1600s when the 2nd Earl of Leicester built his home there. The surrounding area built up. The statue of William Shakespeare in the image was added in the 1800s.
I decided to include the newspaper, which I found on a bench, in the shot because I wanted to show how the small aperture creates a near-infinite depth of field. The only way to get this effect is either through a pinhole or to take multiple shots of the same scene that are then layered in post-production.

This is the chic mall in Nashville. I remember it transforming from a basic strip shopping center into this small marble and brass palace. Back in the day it was called Green Hills Mall. It is far too elegant to be referred in such a pedestrian manner…it is now “The Mall at Green Hills.” A side note: the local grocery chain changed it’s signage around the same time to read “Kroger at Green Hills.” Can’t you just feel the chichi washing over your eyes as you read those word?
People throw money into this fountain for…haven’t a clue why, actually…they just do. The Girl always asks if I have money to throw in and I nearly always replay “no, I’m poor” because I’m a “mean ol’ dad.” When I do have change we take turns trying to flip the coins onto the highest shelf. When we feel daring we toss coins down from the balcony and hope they don’t hit some poor wealthy mall walker. The coins (that don’t hit mall walkers) go to the local Boys and Girls club. I bet it’s a bitch to roll all those coins.
Last week I found the maintenance guy giving the fountain a good scrub. I promised him nobody would be able to see him in the photo, just his ghost. He gave me a confused look.
